After 28.29%: How Much Room Is Left in the BC Cell Efficiency Race?In just over three years, the lab efficiency of back-contact (BC) cells has climbed from 27.09% to 28.29%, only about 1.1 percentage points below crystalline silicon's 29.4% theoretical limit. We review BC structures and variants, the record timeline, mass-production progress and where the 29.4% ceiling comes from, give our estimates for lab and mass-production efficiency in 2027–2030, and look at when tandems may take over.
